I have a '96 Subaru Legacy Outback, 126k w/2.5 engine.?

Heard a rattling sound from engine. There may have been some loss of power, but not much. Drove a mile to find a place to pull off, engine stalled as I coasted into a parking lot. Any ideas what it may be?
